Ms Amal Wartalska

Psychotherapist, Counsellor

Diploma in Counselling or Psychotherapy

Biography

I am an Integrative Counsellor, Psychotherapist and an accredited member of the BACP, providing individual therapy. I hold EMDR UK and Europe accreditation and I use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) to process trauma.

In my model of practice, I draw on different approaches, including humanistic, psychodynamic and trauma informed therapy, especially EMDR, depending on the issues presented, the client's unique personality and their specific needs. However, the most important aspect of my work is creating a safe and supportive relationship with you, the client, where you can feel heard, respected and understood. My approach to therapy is relational (recognising the primary importance of creating a strong, safe and trusting relationship with the client) and anti-oppressive. It also focuses on intersectionality, which means that I acknowledge the unique intersectional experiences of each person and how being a member of different marginalised groups might have exposed them to systemic oppression and socially inflicted trauma and impacted them negatively in their lives.

The aim of my work is to support and empower you to get in touch with and explore your feelings and thoughts and examine how different life experiences impacted on who you are now. This work on connecting to, and safe exploration of, who you are becomes the foundation for processing emotional blocks and gaining a deeper awareness of yourself. It makes it possible to arrive at the place from where you are able to make desired changes into your behaviour and start creating your life in a free and conscious way.

I have a particular interest in trauma and how it impacts on people's ability to have harmonious relationships with themselves and others. Trauma may have happened as a single event, a series of events or there might have been a prolonged continual exposure to it, sometimes spanning over many generations within the family. Acknowledging it and processing the emotional blocks it created opens the door to regaining balance and a sense of wellbeing in a traumatised person's life. I use EMDR, a very powerful and dynamic approach, to process all types of trauma.

My primary education is in visual arts and I see therapy itself as a creative process, where two (or more) people are involved in the act of co-creation of what is a better life for a client, with deeper awareness of their inner and outer world and improved ability to live a more fulfilled life.

I have experience working with: depression, anxiety, trauma, childhood abuse and neglect, cultural issues, systemic issues and intersectionality, immigration and cultural adaptation, mixed race experience, sexual and gender identity, loss and grief.

Although I am located in London, UK, I work solely online, therefore able to connect with clients in different geographical locations.
