Dr Sandra Wayland

Psychologist

Biography

My name is Dr Nomsa Wayland, and I am a qualified counselling psychologist and registered member of the HCPC.

My therapeutic philosophy is rooted in a holistic, integrative model that views mental, physical, diet, lifestyle, spiritual, one's cultural worldview and emotional health and support systems as interconnected facets of the whole person.

I draw on various psychological theories and techniques, including person-centred counselling, psychodynamic theory, existential therapy, cognitive behavioural techniques, and the African philosophy of Ubuntu. This integrative approach allows me to tailor therapy to each client’s unique needs and cultural context, ensuring that no single modality defines their therapeutic journey.

I am passionate about providing a safe, non-judgmental space where clients feel empowered to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences with authenticity. My practice is guided by empathy and respect, and I strive to "walk in one’s world" and truly understand each client’s lived experience. I aim to create a therapeutic environment that honours the individuality and cultural identity of each person, recognising how factors such as diet, lifestyle, and cultural worldview can profoundly influence mental well-being.

My professional experience spans working with individuals facing mood, anxiety, personality disorders, complex trauma, racial-related issues and weight issues, supporting substance abuse recovery services, and helping women who have experienced domestic abuse, etc. I am particularly passionate about working with individuals from minority backgrounds, recognising the unique challenges they may face, such as stigma, racial discrimination, and cultural expectations. As a member of a minority community myself, I am deeply committed to fostering a culturally sensitive space where clients feel seen, respected, and understood.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my work as a psychologist is the privilege of witnessing clients’ journeys toward self-awareness, resilience, and healing. It is profoundly rewarding to support individuals as they confront personal challenges, uncover their strengths, and rediscover their potential. Each client’s courage and growth reaffirm my dedication to this field and motivate me to continue providing compassionate, effective care.
